about LAB
what is LAB?
LAB is an experimental web/print publication featuring the work of creative folks who are passionate about what they do: DIY media makers, freelance artists, independent business owners, craftsters, zinesters, cultural entrepreneurs, and those that blur the borders between all of the above-mentioned categories. Put another way, we like to talk to people who love doing what they do.
What you’ll find in LAB: candid interviews, artist showcases, startup profiles, comics, web (blog) journalism, short fiction, DIY resources, and participatory projects. In a larger sense, LAB is about learning, experimenting, creating, and generally being in a constant state of wonder over what can be done with the application of a little ingenuity & elbow-grease. You’ll find more of the backstory of LAB in the introduction note to issue 0.5 (and in this blog entry).
how does it work?
LAB will be experimenting with a transparent publishing process in which articles and features will be posted online as soon as they’re available. Readers can rate the articles, leave comments, note errors, suggest corrections, and vote whether or not the piece should be included in the next print version.
Completed issues of LAB will be available in two formats: 1) as a free PDF version (best viewed with Adobe Reader), and 2) a print version available through print-on-demand distributor, Lulu. Currently, the print version includes no mark-up— we’re offering it at wholesale to help offset the high price of POD (Print On Demand).
